    We are so excited for another fun-filled summer! We’ve been working hard to secure some fun and different events for everyone to attend this summer. Our schedule is officially out, you can check it out here.
    Also, keep in mind things do change! Keep checking back for updated information!

    This year we have some new events, as well as some repeats!

    Of course, the big event – the Annual Fun Run! It is back and better than ever! Join us this year on the Fourth of July for a Cuchara tradition. You can start sending in registration forms now or sign up on race day at 8 am! The run will begin at 8:30 am at the Community Center. This year we will be switching up our racecourse slightly! Instead of having our participants run on highway 12 for a few feet, we will redirect them through the (somewhat) new path between the Community Center and River Lane. Also, please note, this year we have a small price change for registration! To learn more about the Annual Fourth of July Fun Run, please click here.

    Also, don’t forget about the Cuchara Parade and our Fourth of July Bingo to round out your Fourth of July Festivities!

    The Kids Quilting Workshop is back! (7/2-3) This workshop has been happening for many years thanks to the generous volunteers that put this on for our children. This activity has grown each year and is a testament to the wonderful service this program gives to our summer community. Learn more here!

    This year we are heading back to Mission Wolf & Bishops Castle! (7/9) Join us for this all day adventure. A good portion of this trip will be in the car but stops at Bishops Castle, Mission Wolf, and other various spots for picnics and scenery make this day a full and memorable one!

    A special event! The Recreation Program’s “Fearless Leader,” along with some wonderful friends went to Everest Base Camp this past fall. Come check out the Everest Base Camp Slideshow (7/10) and learn more about the trek!

    We are also offering some other fun and different events! This year we are doing a NEW hike and on a SATURDAY! Come hike with us! We will be going from Cuchara Mountain Park (the old ski area) up the slopes, down to Bear Lake a Blue Lake and back again! This will take place June 30th!

    Be sure to also check out Vi Jones presents Life of Marion Russell Pioneer Woman on July 12th. Marion Russell traveled the Santa Fe trail several times, by herself. She eventually settled in the Stonewall area. Come learn all about her from an expert! 

    Our popular Wildflower Pilgrimage is back again for its 6th Annual! This popular event follows “Fearless Leader” Bruce as he “wanders” (aka hikes) around spots filled with wildflowers. He will point out the flowers and you can mark them on a provided list as you go!

    Back by popular demand is the Walking Tour of Historic Cuchara! Come walk (or use your golf cart!) and learn some history of our beautiful valley!

    Please also note our last bingo for 2018 will NOT be on a Wednesday! Put the date in your calendar and set your alarms! Our last bingo will be July 31st (Tuesday).

    Thank you to everyone who came out this summer to our various events. We had a blast with all of you! We thought’d we give a little recap of things that happened this summer. If you missed out on anything, we hope you join us next summer!

    We kicked off the 2017 with our usual hike to Haunted House Meadow with 30 hikers!  We hiked many mountains this year, including Trinchera, where 4 brave souls made it to the top! To wrap up our regular season, we hiked Haunted House Meadow again, with 25 people! We also had one of our hikers, Riley, do some drone footage while we were in the meadow. We can’t wait to show you the footage!

    We had our annual fun run again this year, and the blue Highway to Heaven shirts were a HUGE success. We ended up with only one youth small left! Thank you to everyone who came out and ran/walked on the morning of the Fourth of July! Also, congratulations to our winners:

    Our Fourth of July Bingo was our biggest bingo of the summer, per usual, with 150 players. Most weeks we averaged around 100 bingo players. One week we had multiple winners on most of our bingo games throughout the night! Every week is different, every year is different. If you haven’t come out to our Wednesday night Bingo sessions, we highly recommend it! It is fun for all ages! If you haven’t attended before, be prepared, the crowd is well-trained! Get ready for our shout-out to All Seasons Real Estate by watching this video and practicing for next year:

     

    We also offer other night activities, such as our Movie Night & Picnic as well as our hikes: Sunset & Stars and our (Almost) Full Moon Hike to treeline of West Spanish Peak. This year our Sunset & Stars was rained out, but we had a great group of about 25 for our (Almost) Full Moon hike, where we were able to watch the sunset, the moonrise, and spend quality time with others in the community. Our Movie Night was also another success, showing Moana. We had families of all ages come out to enjoy a movie under the stars and free glow sticks!

    This year we also introduced Kid Art, which was a blast for both kids and adults! For three weeks kids were able to the Community Center and learn some new crafts and be creative. The activities we perfect for all ages, from nature weaving to rock painting, everyone was able to get involved and make something special.

    Our Walking History Tour of Cuchara was a big success and well-received. We are planning to bring the history tour back next year with more information. Please plan on attending this very informative tour to learn more about Cuchara!

    This year we had a successful Wildflower Pilgrimage, seeing over 70 different flowers. While our Fearless Leader Bruce lead the crowd on a leisurely “wander” through the woods, folks were able to get to meet one another, take photographs, and learn about the wildflowers around the Cuchara Valley. After the morning stroll, the crowd came back together for an evening slideshow of flowers and birds put together by Larry Hollar.

    Even though the regular season of bingo and hikes ended, we hosted a concert by The Trio in the Community Center on August 16th. We had a great turnout and a special night filled with wonderful music and socializing!

    Next year you’ll be able to see Cocklebur in his new home, The Cuchara Community Center! We will also be celebrating the 60th year of the Cuchara Community Center, so if you have any ideas for a celebration, let us know in the comments!

    Thank you to Shawn Bridges who helped put together our Cuchara Coloring Book this year! Money raised by the sale of the Coloring Books is going towards the Waller Science Grant, helping students and teachers!
