Geology with Heloise

Heloise is a geologist that know tons about the rocks and formations of the Cuchara Valley. We will meet at the Community Center for a classroom style bit of learning with Heloise. She will impart some knowledge to us and answer those long-held questions that you’ve had. There will be a light lunch provided at The TImbers before we head out for a geology field trip with our teacher. 10:00-2:00
Annual Fun Run / Walk

The race course is a gently rolling 1-mile course through the back roads of Cuchara! The race will begin and end at the Cuchara Community Center. Any proceeds from the race will benefit the Cuchara Recreation Summer Programs. All ages are welcome! The first 300 who register will receive an official race t-shirt!

You get to meet many new and interesting people from all over the world. Most who attend are regulars but each year we have visitors from all over! We play many different types of games, most of which are common games. Our prizes are items donated from area businesses that support the Cuchara Recreation Program. Bingo night (usually on Wednesdays) is a night filled with laughter and fun. You don’t want to miss out on this classic Cuchara experience while vacationing during the summer months, so come join us while you’re in town!

This is not a Cuchara Valley Recreation program but one being led by the La Veta Trails organization. It goes along with the theme of our week, plus the 2 presenters for this program gave an impressive talk for us last year about the geologic history of our valley. I think it will be a great thing to attend. It will be at the La Veta Mercantile at 6:00-8:00

Here's a chance to improve your pictures — whether you use a phone or a camera to capture them and whether you're an absolute beginner or already a pretty good phototaker who wants to learn more. Come pick up a tip, a trick, or a new skill for shooting and editing photos. You might even catch a bit of the theory behind it all. Certainly you'll catch some fun and camaraderie in this flexible and free-flowing workshop.
What will you learn? You tell us! The goal is for each person, at their own level, to walk away with something new that sparks their passion for the wonder of artful images.
What should you bring? Whatever you've got! Phone or camera to take some shots; laptop or phone to edit them. If you just want to work on editing, Randy will have some images you can use.
After a bit of hello-and-what would-you-like-to-learn, here's how it'll go:
* Randy will give a 30-minute overview of key concepts and definitions that matter for good photos. You get a cheatsheet to take away.
* Randy will then do a 20-minute demonstration of photo editing, intended to both illustrate key techniques and show some of what's possible.
* Then, it's time to get to work: Randy will circulate around, collaborating with each participant as they take photos and-or edit them. With tons of interesting shots to be taken around and from the Community Center and the Chapel, there'll be plenty to keep us busy.
* Randy will stick around, so stay as long as you like.

Sunset & Friends

We meet at the Cuchara Community Center to drive to Cordova Pass and hike about 3/4 of a mile to a grand overview of our Cuchara valley and beyond. We have time to meet new friends, enjoy a picnic and check out a wonderful sunset.
As the sky grows dark, stars begin to pop out. A quick and simple astronomy lesson will be given so that you might be able to take your knowledge home with you. We walk back to the Cordova Pass parking lot with the help of flashlights. A unique experience to say the least!
Bring water, food, comfortable shoes, flashlights, and warm clothes!

Cuchara Feature Tour

Do you know you know all the landmarks, geologic features and historical locations that are visible along your drive along highway 12? Whether you are brand new to the valley or an old-timer, you will learn something new on this driving excursion, or I’ll give your money back.

Walking History Tour

Join us on our very popular and always changing Walking History Tour of Cuchara where you will learn some of the earliest history of our beloved Cuchara. You’ll appreciate Cuchara even more. We have updated the tour to include some simple geologic history, Native American information and Land Grant maps. You will see old photos of our area and learn stories of some of our earliest pioneers.Join us in our walk or ride along in a golf cart.
